 Name : Noah Thorley

More about Me:

I studied Philosophy, Ethics and History here, during my time I was a Course Representative each year for my Philosophy and Ethics cohort. Through this I raised a variety of feedback gathered by my cohort with my notable action was helping assisting in putting Level H exams online into alternative assessments. Throughout my time at university I worked several different jobs from working as a student ambassador to COVID marshalling and working in post which I then got onto a pastoral scholarship for the work I have done. On top of this, I helped create the Queer Adventurers Society which I was treasurer for last academic year.

My Manifesto:

Student voices to be heard

  • Continue to give students a voice and a platform to shape our university. Students are at the core of the Hope community, which is why I want you to see the changes you deserve.
  • Continue to update and improve the Course Rep system to able to have a greater effect in the necessary changes for their courses and a wider impact

Accessibility

I want to make Hope Accessible to every student who studies here to get the most out of both their student experience and education. My focus points for this are:

  • A sensory room on Creative Campus
  • An inclusive marking policy
  • Continue work on Inclusivity - Communities of Practice to help make the changes YOU want to see

Reducing the hidden cost of university:

  • Expanding the amount of your needed books in the library
  • Book exchanges between students
  • Academic hardship fund

Assessments

  • Allow students to submit assignments for a plagiarism check before the final assignment submission, including dissertations
  • Review of assessment style - cannot guarantee but I promise to you that I will try. Exams have always been a memory test and I want this to be reviewed whether there is a better method for courses for assignments outside of exams
  • Assessment preparation - make sure every course goes over each assignment to maximise your success.
  • Attainment gap - no-ones grade should be impacted by your background.

What I am Currently working on:

  • Communities of Practice (CoP) Inclusivity, a document called Checklist of Inclusivity has been developed and we have just completed a pilot study in one department with positive feedback and we are now preparing to role this out as a pilot in two other departments
  • Course Rep system; I put the foundations in place for an improved system last year but I want to increase the opportunities that Course Reps have by introducing optional workshops.
  • Planning for Disability History Month
