Student Reps

Every year students volunteer to become your Student Representatives. They carry out their roles alongside their studies and their responsibilities include representing different groups of Hope students as well as to champion their interests. Here are the electees for this year with their manifestos.

Student Representatives 2023 / 2024

NI / ROI Student Representative

Madison Campbell

"I believe I would excel as a Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland student representative for our university.

Firstly, I have a deep appreciation for the unique challenges and opportunities that students from NI and ROI may face when studying abroad. Having grown up there, I can relate to the cultural adjustments, academic transitions, and the longing for a supportive network away from home. This personal experience would enable me to connect with fellow students and offer them valuable insights and support.

Additionally, I am an effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills. Being a student representative requires the ability to bridge the gap between students and the university administration. As a previous women’s representative I am confident in my ability to listen to the concerns and ideas and relay them back to the university for a better experience for all.

Furthermore, I am an advocate for diversity and inclusivity. I believe in creating an environment where all students, regardless of their background, feel welcome and valued.

Lastly, I am organized and detail-oriented, ensuring that events, meetings, and initiatives run smoothly. This skill would be instrumental in coordinating activities and gatherings for students from NI and ROI, facilitating engagement and integration into the larger university community.

In conclusion, my personal experience, communication skills, dedication to inclusivity, and organizational abilities position me as an ideal candidate to represent the students from NI and ROI. I would love to take on this challenge and have high expectations of what I can accomplish.

Disabled Student Representative

Samantha Parker

"Studies in the UK have found that students with disabilities are more likely to drop out of university, and those who go on to finish their degrees tend to have lower results. 21% of students studying at Liverpool Hope have disabilities – visible or invisible. Therefore, I believe having a DSR is crucial, ensuring the needs of disabled students are met, allowing them equal opportunities to complete their degree, get the results they deserve, and enjoy their time at university.

As a disabled student, I am aware of the barriers students may face when accessing support, including inexperience in navigating which services will best meet their specific needs and the anxiety that can be associated with such experiences. I feel that I can use my personal experiences to help other disabled students at Hope, directing them to suitable support.

As DSR, my key aim would be to advocate on behalf of disabled students, raising awareness of the difficulties they may face. I will also campaign to promote a more accessible and inclusive environment by liaising with the SU and university staff to implement the necessary accommodations to make Liverpool Hope a welcoming and supportive community.  I have experience listening to the needs of students and speaking on their behalf from my role as course rep in the first year.

Overall, I am a proactive and dedicated student who genuinely cares about the disabled community at Liverpool Hope and therefore believe I will be the most suitable candidate for this role. "

Women's Representative

Lara Perry

"My name is Lara, I’m from Liverpool and I am passionate about representing the female community at Hope. As a student of History and Politics, I am well aware of the social issues faced by women, and I wish to provide an avenue for change in my own community.

We face so many nuanced problems as women, which can transpire into our everyday lives and can affect our progress and confidence. We deserve an effective way to channel our views and to in turn create a safe space in our university.

As Women’s Student Representative, I would aim to be approachable and welcoming and to allow the female student body to raise concerns about the issues they face, whether on campus or in their wider communities. Overall, it would be a privilege to bring together the women of Hope and to give us all a voice which will be heard."

LGBTQ+ Student Representative

Dion Smart

"When I think of a student representative I imagine a great listener and an advocate who aspires to be the bridge between the staff and yourself in order to see your ideas through. That's who I desire to be. An individual you can count on to represent your best interests.

I endeavour to inspire those that aren't comfortable in their truth. In saying live your life the way that feels right to you I hope to inspire those that struggle to reconcile their race, faith and sexuality because I have been there, I am there, and aim to be like those who have found peace in their pride.

According to Stonewall’s LGBT in Britain: University article 'Two in five LGBT students (42%) have hidden their identity at university for fear of discrimination'. It's an ever present fear for some of us. I wish I could say it's never been a fear of mine.

What I hope for is an academic year led by kindness and freedom of self expression regardless of gender, race and/or sexuality. Most importantly I hope everyone, LGBTQ+ and allies alike, can feel free to come and share with me their ideas, thoughts and feelings in order to better my understanding of the experiences of all our colleagues, improve them where needed and help maintain them where applicable."

Sustainability Student Representative

Ellie Baldwin

"

Sustainability is a very significant issue for all people and has the ability to completely change life as we know it. I hope to use this role to promote the positive changes needed within the university for a smooth transition to a sustainable future.

During my time at Hope I have been working on the Fossil Free campaign to prevent the university from investing in fossil fuels; volunteering in the Childwall Woods and attending workshops and educational events within the university and the wider community. This has given me a strong foundation and understanding for the role of sustainability rep.

I would love to be able to continue these campaigns along with many of the other initiatives, including those that other students have raised with me.

These initiatives include:

  • The fossil free careers campaign

  • Clothes swaps

  • Finding eco and money saving hacks for students

  • Further planting on campus

  • Make-up container recycling collections

It is wonderful to hear of so many students with ideas to promote sustainability and I hope to be the person to realise these ideas with you.

Thanks for reading,

Ellie :)) "

International Student Representative

Scout Dragon

"I moved to Liverpool from Brunswick, Germany to study Drama and English Literature. Because I relocated here by myself, I know first-hand the struggle of having no support in place when you arrive. It is understandable, that leaving your home and culture behind can be a challenging transition, especially for international students, as you are settling into a completely different atmosphere. The barrier between international students and those from the UK can be scary and overwhelming.
I plan to introduce resources to ease culture shock and help us settle in and get familiar with the British way of life. These could include dealing with a new currency, getting a job as a non-native, and getting familiar with British norms.
In Germany, I spent the last four years volunteering with a non-profit organisation to integrate children with immigration backgrounds into society. From this, I learnt to ease difficult transitions effectively. I plan to use that experience to make you feel at home here, no matter where you come from or what issues you may bring.
I visited most European countries and learned to speak many languages, including French and Spanish. Besides my studies, I am a part of the Musical Theatre and Drama Societies. And soon, I will be co-leading a new society for film.
I hope to meet many people in various areas and create spaces where international students, like myself, can feel at home. I look forward to offering an open ear and supporting you in every way possible."

Trans & Non-Binary Student Representative (TNBR)

Jaden

"Hey I'm Jaden, I am a non-binary transman using he/they pronouns. I was trans/non-binary rep last year and would love to carry on with the role again this year. As I was rep last year I have gained a better understanding of the role and lots of ideas I'd love to be able to implement. I had the opportunity to go to the NUS Liberation Conference where I was able to meet trans reps from universities all over the country to share ideas and concerns about LGBTQ+ life in university. Last year, I held a charity stall selling pronoun badges, worked with reps and societies to hold social events and carried out a survey to find out the views of LGBTQ+ students in regards to the uni. I am currently in the process of working with the SU to update the Trans Guide to Liverpool. If I am elected as trans rep I aim to work with societies and other unis to try and hold social events, carry on ensuring the uni is doing all it can to support trans students and listen to the voices, ideas and concerns of students. If anyone has any questions feel free to email me at 22001930@hope or dm on insta @lhutransenbyrep."

Network of Hope Student Representative

Karenne Aspin

"As a Level H student with the Network of Hope, I have been a student voice representative since Level C, and increased my responsibilities during Level I by joining the NoH Experience and Academic Quality Committee.

I feel it's important that students in the NoH have a voice and feel included within the Liverpool Hope community. Having experienced the Network personally I feel well placed to contribute to improving the connection between Network students and Liverpool Hope.

Representing my fellow Network students at a local level has been very fulfilling and one which I have taken great pride in so far during my University journey. Being able to add more value in the role of SU representative for Network of Hope would be a great honour. "

Non-Residential Student Representative

Pamela Pendleton

"As a Non-Residential Student myself I know that it can be hard to feel like you fit in and how hard it is to find societies that fit around your transport home and other commitments, not feeling like you can engage in conversations because it’s all to do with uni halls... well thats where I come in! I am determined to make non residential University life just as fun and inclusive as students who live on campus, I promise to make sure your time on campus is the best it can be, from more societies aimed at students who live on campus to more events targeted at off campus students to join in with of an evening as well as throughout the week. However way you see it, we are all away from home working hard to achieve a degree so let’s all have the best time achieving our goals, no matter who you are or how far away from campus you live I am here to do all I can to make sure your time at Hope University is just as good as the students who live on campus."
